Southeast Asia is entering a new phase of energy development as rapid economic growth, industrialisation, digital infrastructure and electrification drive rapidly growing demand for power.
According to the IEA’s World Energy Investment 2026, investment in renewables, grids and end-use technologies across Southeast Asia is expected to reach a record USD 57 billion in 2026. Renewable energy investment alone is projected at USD 22 billion, while grid investment is expected to reach USD 15 billion as countries strengthen their power systems to support rising electricity demand and integrate more renewable energy.
The opportunity extends beyond generation. Southeast Asia’s electricity demand is growing faster than the global average, while data centres, industrial electrification, electric mobility and increasing cross-border power trade are creating new requirements for energy storage, smart grids, energy efficiency, digital energy management and system flexibility. The ASEAN Power Grid alone is estimated to require around USD 27 billion in cross-border interconnection investment by 2040.
